HELPING TO MAKE MYKONOS A BETTER PLACE FOR ITS ANIMALS
Mykonos Animal Welfare is a legal charity that was formed in 2005. Since then we have been legally and actively involved in the health and welfare of our animals. Our main objectives are sterilizations, emergency vet care and rehoming of abandoned cats and dogs.
Although most of our stray are cats and dogs we also help whenever possible pelicans, birds, reptiles, ducks, owls, snakes, donkeys and horses. The group consists of five executive committee members as well as over one and fifty regular members from all over the world.

We enjoy organising cake bake days or hot dog sales during the summer months and every year before Christmas we hold our annual Christmas Bazaar. These events help to raise badly needed money. We have many charity boxes placed all over the island that also helps raise money and during the summer months the tourists to the island are very generous. Many tourists are very saddened by the conditions of many of our beautiful animals and want to help in any way possible. We also have a large Dog Donation Box at the airport that all our visitors see on their way home.
Our vet bills are usually a minimum of 2,000 Euro per month so it is essential that we keep up our efforts to recruit new members and encourage donations. Our volunteers extend their time, energy and in many cases personal finances to this very worthy cause. As the organisation has no shelter or office virtually all the money collected is used directly to help the animals.
Animals receiving medical attention or waiting to be rehomed are kept at the homes of one or two executive committee members. This can be extremely difficult when we are handling many animals. Our long term goal is to establish a private clinic with a holding area. This way we could also encourage the many volunteers and vets who have offered their services over the years to come to our island and help us.
This indeed would be a dream come true! In the meantime we will push ahead and try to do as much as we can on a daily basis. We are also working together with other animal groups and would like to educate the public more about the benefits of neutering and the general care of the animals. Greece is a beautiful country and Mykonos is a jewel but there is a side to the fame and glamour of this island that many people do not want to see. How can you dine in the finest restaurants, swim in the blue Aegean and dance the night away when so many animals are starving and suffering.
